Blake Shelton has found himself in hot water for a new song he released on New Year’s Eve.
The country singer performed his new song, ‘Minimum Wage’ on a NYE countdown show, and some people weren’t too appreciative of the lyrics and message.
Before taking the stage, Shelton told the show’s host, Carson Daly, “I can’t speak for everybody else, but I had a great 2020. Even though a lot of bad stuff happened personally for me, I got engaged to Gwen Stefani, and I don’t care what else happened besides that. That made it a great year.”
Considering everything that went down in 2020, it was a pretty bold statement to make. But that was just the beginning.
The song, which seems like a love letter to his new fiancée Gwen Stefani, contains the lyrics: “Girl, your love can make a man feel rich on minimum wage.”
After performing, Shelton faced a lot of backlash for the choice of lyrics. A multi-millionaires singing to another multi-millionaire about having no cash just didn’t sit right with people, especially considering how many people in the USA faced unemployment and financial troubles thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Blake Shelton singing ‘your love could make a man feel rich on minimum wage’ just cements the fact that rich people have absolutely no f—–g clue,” one person wrote on Twitter.
Another shared: “Does anyone else find Blake Shelton’s ‘Minimum Wage’ song to be incredibly tone deaf to our country’s current state?”
Neither Shelton nor Stefani have responded to the criticism.
