Comedian Ramy Youssef’s acclaimed comedy “Ramy” returned for its second season in May, but if things had gone according to plan, the new season would have featured a very unexpected guest star.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Youssef revealed that Lindsay Lohan had actually been cast — but never bothered to show up when she was scheduled to film.
“We had an idea that it wasn’t just her, but we were interested in this idea of people that you don’t really think are Muslim,” Youssef told the magazine.
“We actually cast Lindsay Lohan, because Lindsay had this whole thing about converting to Islam. And so we had cast Lindsay and I talked to her and she was down, and then, you know, like Lindsay does, we just kind of stopped hearing from her,” he added with a laugh.
“I was trying to get ahold of her and she was on the call sheet, and I guess she couldn’t make it. I don’t know, I never heard from her,” he said.
“You can’t try and put Lindsay in a box, that’s what I know,” he said of the “Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club” star. “Lindsay is going to be Lindsay.”
Despite Lohan being a no-show, Youssef told EW there are no hard feelings, and he’d love to have her appear in the third season. “She is one of my favourite Muslims,” he joked.
Lohan continued to ghost Youssef for another few months but he just provided EW with another update during the Emmy nominee roundtable.
“I think [Lohan’s] a comedic genius. She didn’t show up but she did follow me on Twitter like a week ago and I’m taking the breadcrumbs wherever I can, where I’m like, ‘Okay, well, I got a follow, we can bring that up to her agent and see what happens.’”
Youssef’s confession thoroughly confused fellow nominees Dan Levy and Maya Rudolph.
“First of all, I have a million questions but we can offline most of those,” Levy responded. “When you say she didn’t show up, were you guys like, the cameras are ready and she wasn’t there…what does that mean, not showing up?”
“I spoke to her about the role, she said, ‘I’m in, I’ll be there, I’ll be in New York,’ we put her on the call sheet,” said Youssef laughing. “A couple days before I started to get a bad feeling, I was like, I don’t know, I haven’t heard from her and kind of tried to get her and we all know what happened. It was no hard feelings, we weren’t really expecting it at a certain point, but she’s someone I am very excited to work with.”
According to EW, Lohan’s reps didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
